How To Microdose Mushrooms: A Definitive Guide

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

This Is The Guide That I WISH I Had When I Started Microdosing Mushrooms…

This article is going to equip you with the tools and knowledge you need to get the most out of your microdosing experience… In fact, you will be miles ahead of most people… Even experienced microdosers…

Because here’s the thing, most people come to microdosing from a Western way of thinking… They desire a quick fix magic bullet approach…

The general thinking and belief structure is… “I have a problem or roadblock, therefore it is bad, and I need to get rid of it as quickly as possible…” Fair enough. This is the way our culture has conditioned us to think.

However, life doesn’t work like that. At least it doesn’t work well… Because a problem, sickness, or “roadblock”, comes as a warning sign along the road… It is trying to tell us something. By covering up the “sign”, nothing changes, except that we remain in ignorance… and our life stays the same… Or worse… We may even go backwards, and things get worse

Only by reading the signs (or symptoms), and facing them head on, will we overcome them… And through this process find new levels of joy, happiness, purpose, and fulfillment.

It just so happens that microdosing is tremendously supportive in this process of transformation, when you are equipped with the proper tools and knowledge…

How Microdosing Will Help You Transform Your Life…

Psilocybin has an amazing capacity to help us create new neural pathways. A neural pathway is kind of like a “road” in your nervous system. When we are stuck in an undesirable state of being like depression or anxiety, we are constantly traversing the same “road” or neural pathway…

Only by creating new neural pathways will we fundamentally transform and create the life we want to live…

Here’s the amazing thing about psilocybin… Not only does it help us create new pathways, it also helps us to identify the current pathways (ways of being) we are stuck in… This is key, because only once we are aware of a pattern, do we have the power to change it!

This is why psilocybin is so effective at treating mental health challenges like:

  • Depression

  • ADHD/ADD

  • Anxiety

  • PTSD

  • Mood disorders

  • Addiction

As well as supporting desirable states of being like…

  • Productivity and Focus

  • Flow States

  • Improved relationships and empathy

  • Energy

  • Creativity

  • Deeper connection to nature and spirituality

  • Heightened awareness

  • Improvements in meditation practice

Everything You Need To Know To Achieve Optimal Microdosing Results…

So, in order to create these new “roads” (neural pathways), it’s not as simple as popping a (microdose) pill, and going on with your day. Although some people notice benefits from this approach, we would like to suggest a more finessed method…

That’s why we have developed our “Majik Microdosing Method” to microdose success…

But First… Some Microdosing Basics

What Is A Microdose?

A microdose is a tiny amount of psilocybin, generally about 1/10th to 1/20th of a “full psychedelic” dose. It is small enough that you can complete all your regular daily tasks, yet strong enough that life often seems brighter, and most people notice improvements in their mental health…

Generally, a microdose strength is anywhere from 50mg-200mg of whole mushrooms per day. This varies greatly depending on the individual. Some people need up to 400mg, although I suggest keeping it to 200mg or less.

How Often and When Should I Dose?

We recommend taking one capsule each morning on an empty stomach. Some people like taking a second dose in the afternoon. You can also take your microdose in the evening, however most people find the energizing effect of a microdose can keep them up at night.

Our suggested schedule is 5 days on, 2 days off (more on that below…). However, play around with scheduling and find what works for you.

What Are The Risks of Microdosing?

Microdosing risks are almost nonexistent… Microdosing psilocybin is safe and effective for (most) people. However, if you are taking antipsychotic medications, or you are prone to bipolar, schizophrenia or other serious mental health challenges, microdose with caution, and work with a trained professional.

The other risk to keep in mind is legality. Psilocybin is illegal in most countries, so buyer beware! That being said, once you have acquired your psilocybin, whether in capsule form, or in whole mushrooms, simply grind the whole mushrooms, or place the capsules in a discretely labeled bottle, to err on the side of caution…

How To 10x Your Microdose Results (What I Wish I Knew When I Started Microdosing)…

I started microdosing back in 2019, and to be honest I was flopping around like a fish out of water… I had no structure to my microdosing… I would take random amounts, at random times throughout the day, and I was doing it every single day (not a wise choice)...

In the end, the results were profound, however I suffered and struggled far more than was necessary…

Over the years I have honed the ideal microdosing experience down to a few basic steps that will make your microdosing capsules 10x more effective… I call these “The 7 Steps To Microdosing Mastery”.

So without further ado…

Here’s the “The 7 Steps To Microdosing Mastery”

1. Setting A Clear Intention

Your intention will be your “north star” through your microdosing journey… It will be your guide, so no matter what arises in your experience, you can stay focused on your goal. If you stray from your path, or you get lost in an emotional or mental process, you can always come back to that North Star; to your intention.

You are likely struggling in some area of your life, and that is why you are drawn to microdosing… So take some time to consider your problem / difficulty… This is going to help you formulate your intention.

For example you may be having trouble with anxiety, focus, creativity, depression or PTSD… Whatever your “problem” is, take some time to meditate and reflect on it…

Let’s use anxiety as an intention setting example…

Your intention is going to be focused on the positive, so instead of saying something like “I want my anxiety to go away…”, you will want to say something like “My intention is to live a joyful, peaceful and serene life…” Use your own wording of course…

The idea is to focus on the life you want to be living, even if it seems impossible or unattainable right now…

So ask yourself…

  • What would my life look like without (anxiety, depression, etc.)?

  • What is my ideal daily state of being?

  • If I wasn’t (anxious, depressed, etc.) how would I spend my time, and what would I be doing with my life?

Over time, your answers to the questions may change… And this is good! They are not meant to be set in stone… Transformation and growth are an ever changing and evolving processes… However you need to start somewhere!

Answering these questions will help you formulate your microdosing goals and intentions.

2. Creating A Container (Duration and Consistency)

Creating a clear container for yourself is important, especially when you are first starting out… The 2 things you will need to keep in mind are duration and consistency…

Duration

This is how long you will microdose for… We have found the ideal duration for people is 3 months… This allows you ample time to identify old patterns and habits, and create new ones.

That being said, if 3 months is too large of a commitment, we recommend a minimum of 6 weeks…

Remember that whatever duration you choose, you can always continue microdosing once you have completed your chosen length of time.

Consistency / Schedule

This is how often you are going to microdose for… There are various protocols people choose. These include:

  • 5 days on, 2 days off

  • 4 days on, 3 days off

  • 1 day on, 2 days off

  • Microdosing every other day

Notice how every option includes days off. This is very important! The days off from microdosing allows you time to reflect, integrate and prevent building a tolerance.

Our favorite (And recommended) schedule is 5 days on, 2 days off. We like this schedule because it is integrated into your daily life, which is how you will effectively transform your way of being. It also fits into a 7 day calendar so it is easy to keep track of your days on, and days off of microdosing.

Whatever consistency you choose, we suggest being disciplined and sticking to that… At least to begin with… This allows you to create a deeper connection with the mushrooms and the microdosing routine. Once you have finished your first duration (let’s say 3 months), you may choose to microdose on a more intuitive basis.

3. Proper Dosage

Finding the proper micro-dosage is different for everyone. Weight, size and age do not seem to influence tolerance, so you will have to find what works best for you. The most important thing to keep in mind with microdosing, is that you should feel the microdose, but it should not be so strong that you are unable to perform your daily tasks.

Microdosing Effects to look out for…

  • Increased creativity and focus

  • Colors, sounds and sensations heightened - The world appears and feels “brighter”

  • Increase in mood and energy

  • Decrease in anger, depression, and anxiety

  • Deeper connection to self, nature and other people

  • Increased self-awareness

Finding Your Ideal Dose…

Our lowest recommended dose is 50mg, and this a safe starting place if you are new to microdosing. It is low enough that we have never witnessed someone feel it to be “too high” of a dose, but most people will notice some kind of effect… If 50mg is not strong enough, simply increase your dose by 50mg each day until you find your “sweet spot”.

If you know that you are tolerant to mushrooms, or you are an experienced psychonaut, you may wish to start with 100mg capsules… Increase or decrease accordingly.

Something To Keep In Mind…

If you are taking pharmaceuticals, or you smoke marijuana, you may need a higher than normal dose. I have seen people need up to 400mg at a time to achieve the results most people get from 100mg.

4. Daily Ritual

You may already have a “daily practice” of yoga, meditation, journaling, artistic expression, etc… If this is the case, it will be simple to integrate your microdose into this. If not, we highly suggest you incorporate some kind of reflective practice into your daily life, so you can get the most out of your Microdose… Even starting with 10-20 minutes each day can have a profound effect…

The way I incorporate microdosing into my daily ritual looks like this, so you can get a feel for what a daily ritual looks like…

1. Setting Intention - First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, I take my microdose and hold it up to my heart. I speak my intention out loud, or silently, and I acknowledge the spirit of the mushroom… So, if my intention is to live with joy, I will say something like this: “Good morning mushroom spirit, will you support me in my intention to live with joy and laughter?” I then ingest the microdose, often with a hot drink like tea, coffee or cacao (this can help deliver the medicine deeper into your nervous system).

2. Daily Practice - I like to sit in heart centered meditation for 10-20 minutes. This is a simple meditation, where I focus my awareness on my heart, and cultivate a sense of joy and bliss. I follow up with some sort of somatic practice. I personally like tai chi / qi gong. Others enjoy yoga, dance or stretching. If I have time, I will also go for a 20-30 minute walk in nature - With a focus on connecting spiritually to the territory. This whole practice can be anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on my day.

3. Integration - I spend at least 5-10 minutes to integrate whatever I experienced during my practice. This may be journaling, or simply sitting in contemplative meditation. This allows an easeful transition into the rest of my day.

I share this to give you an idea of what a daily ritual may look like. Find what works best for you! This may be a breathwork practice, spending time in the garden, or making music / art… The idea here is to have time to be alone, and to be in a state of self reflection, whatever that may be for you…

5. Journal Your Results

Journaling your results is an important part of integrating your experience… It will help you to reflect honestly on your experience… How are you improving, and moving in a positive momentum towards your goal? And how are you getting distracted, or losing momentum?

Some people do well with a daily journaling practice, either first thing in the morning, or in the evening before bed… While others find they can’t commit to journaling daily, and prefer journaling once or twice a week…

One method that works well, is to journal on your days off. So if you follow the recommended 5 days on, 2 days off protocol, then during your 2 days off you can reflect on the past week of microdosing.

Here are some helpful journaling prompts and ideas to get started…
  • What epiphanies / realizations did I have today / this week?

  • What profound (small or large) experiences did I have this week?

  • How has my _______ (Anxiety, depression, etc.) been today / this week?

  • How could I have handled this differently, or improve my results?

  • Was I closer or farther from my goal of _______ today / this week?

  • What is holding me back from this goal, or what did I do differently that improved my results?

  • What are 3 things I am grateful for today / this week?

6. Connecting To The Spirit Of The Mushroom

Everything in nature, whether plant, fungi, animal, or stone, has its own unique energy and spirit… Indigenous cultures knew how to speak to and connect with this spirit and thus could create amazing healing medicines without the use of modern science… They used spiritual science.

We have access to this same spiritual science, it is part of our innate design… All we need to do is to simply sit, listen and to open a dialogue with the plant or fungi… If possible, do this each time you take your microdose… However, doing one longer meditation with the spirit of the mushroom, can be very helpful to create a stronger connection with its spirit…

This relationship with the mushroom spirit will be an ongoing connection that will grow and change with time, just like your human relationships…

Remember to be playful and have fun in this process!

7. Integration

Integration is potentially the most important part of microdosing (or any transformational experience). It is the process of actual transformation and growth in your everyday life… This is the practical side of spirituality…

In an ideal world, we don’t need psychedelics like psilocybin… Because we already live a healthy, balanced and connected life… However, that's not the case for most people. Thus the need for microdosing comes in…

When you have truly integrated your microdose (or macrodose) experiences, then you have integrated (and transformed) on a fundamental day-to-day level. Therefore, you can live life without the medicine… When people reach this point, they often still work with psilocybin, but only when they feel they need a boost, or they simply want to reconnect with its unique healing spirit…

Integration Often Happens When You DON’T Take Your Microdoses…

Integration happens everyday, in every moment. It is not something you “achieve”, it is something you live… It is an ever growing, ever changing process… The days off from your microdosing experience are when you can really integrate, because you have taken off your “training wheels” (microdoses) and you are learning to “ride” on your own…

We also suggest taking at least 1-2 weeks off once you have completed your chosen microdose duration. So if you are microdosing for 3 months, then after this time, take at least 1-2 weeks off to integrate, reflect and see how life feels without psilocybin.

Integration is about assessing your state of being.

Ideally, this assessment happens on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis… It is not about being critical or hard on yourself… It is about being honest with yourself… It is about observing yourself from a neutral place as much as possible, so you can truly transform how you respond internally and externally in your life.

Integration is congratulating yourself on your “victories” and assessing how you can improve or make different choices, when you “fall short” of your goal / intention…

Tying All Of This Together…

If you look closely at each of these “steps”, you will find that they all weave into one another… Each one compliments the others.

More importantly, they all require a sense of self awareness and self reflection… They ask us to listen deeply to our own rhythm, to our thoughts, patterns, beliefs, and actions… And as you can see, this is a daily action…

At first it may seem daunting and difficult, but over time it becomes a way of life… And this way of life is one which is filled with a new level of joy, love, and connection. Your old “problems” will be put in the past, and when they surface once again, you will know how to greet them with patience and compassion… And how to let them go so they no longer control you…

This is the power of psilocybin, and the power of microdosing. The ultimate goal of microdosing is to reach a point in which you no longer need to microdose…
