So you’ve heard of Microdosing mushrooms, and you’re ready to give it a try! The simplest way to get started, is to just buy a package of Microdose capsules…
But perhaps you’d rather make your own!
Why People Choose To Make Their Own Microdoses…
Budget (You can save on costs when you make your own microdoses)
Legal issues (Most countries don’t allow the sale of microdoses online)
It can be fun to create your own microdoses
Quality control (Not all products are organic and from a reputable source… That’s why we choose only the highest quality ingredients for our capsules)
Custom Formulations (Perhaps you have a specific issue or herbal formulation you would like to create for your Microdosing purpose…)
What Is A Microdose of Mushrooms?
So before we go any further, let’s go over exactly what a Microdose of mushrooms actually is…
To put it simply, a Microdose is when someone consumes a tiny quantity of psilocybin mushrooms. A Microdose is generally between 50mg - 200mg of whole mushroom. This is about 1/10th to 1/25th of the quantity needed for a full on “trip”… So it is definitely “micro”…
The idea here is to consume just enough to feel the benefits like increased mood, focus, and awareness… People also report Microdosing makes colors and sounds become more vivid, their connection to nature and to other people is enhanced, and they just generally feel “better”…
Whatever dose you find works best for you, it is important to keep in mind that you should be able to perform any regular daily task after Microdosing…
The Two Methods Of Microdosing You Should Be Aware Of…
There are two main methods of “ingesting” a Microdose.
1. Capsules
This is when you encapsulate your Microdose and swallow it with liquid… like most over the counter herbal supplements…
2. Powder or Whole Mushroom
This is when you simply take your Microdose in a powder or whole mushroom form either in a drink or on its own…
Why People Love Microdose Capsules…
Microdose capsules are by far the most popular method of Microdosing…
There are several reasons you may prefer capsules over powder or raw mushrooms…
The strength is pre-measured, so there’s no way you can take “too much”…
It is convenient and tasteless… You simply take your capsule with water, tea or coffee…
It is discreet… If you are concerned about what others may think, or if you are traveling, you can simply take your Microdose like you would any other supplement! You can even take an old herbal supplement bottle, and fill it up with your mushroom capsules…
It is easy to share with others… If you want to bring your microdoses to a party, a gathering, or out with friends, capsules are the simplest and most user-friendly way to include others in the experience…
Capsules maintain the psilocybin’s potency… When exposed to air, psilocybin (the active ingredient in mushrooms) begins to break down. The capsule will protect the ingredients from losing potency.
Why You Might Prefer Powdered Mushrooms…
All this being said, there are some reasons people prefer eating powder instead of capsules…
You can fit more medicinal ingredients into your powders… It is common practice to combine other herbs like reishi and lion’s mane into a Microdose formula… You can only fit so much into a single capsule, however when it comes to a powder, you can add all sorts of other superfood or herbal ingredients!
It can be a fun way to ingest mushrooms… One of my favourite ways to Microdose (and Macrodose) is to create a medicinal beverage with cacao or coffee. Powdered mushroom is the easiest way to do this… Making a morning Microdose beverage is a great way to work with the medicine!
It is easier to play around with Microdose strength… In powder form, it is easy to increase or decrease the strength of your Microdose depending on your mood, or what you have planned that day! Just simply increase or decrease your dose accordingly…
A Note On Whole Mushrooms…
What about just eating whole mushrooms instead of powder? Wouldn’t that be the easiest method…?
Well, no not exactly…
Unless you have an extremely accurate and exact scale, it’s very hard to have a consistent dose with whole dried (non-ground) mushrooms. That’s because the weight of a mushroom's stem and caps will vary greatly depending on the mushroom… It is never consistent. Therefore, it is very hard to know how much you are taking each time.
A powder on the other hand, can either be weighed out ahead of time… Or you can simply figure out how many mg’s of powder per 1/8 of a teaspoon. Dose accordingly each day.
The Best Way To Prepare Psilocybin Mushrooms For Microdosing…
So now that you have an idea of the methods to Microdose, how do you actually prepare your mushrooms?
Well this is the easiest part…
1. To begin, make sure your mushrooms are dried… If you bought your mushrooms online or from a “dealer”… Then your mushrooms are definitely dry… If you grew them yourself, or you picked them fresh… you will want to dry them out before you grind them…
2. I always prepare my mushrooms by first grinding them into a powder. I simply use a coffee grinder or “magic bullet” type blender to grind my whole psilocybin mushrooms into a very fine powder. This will often take several “rounds” in the coffee grinder.
3. I start by adding at least 5 grams of whole dried psilocybin mushrooms into my coffee grinder (or whatever fits inside)…
4. Once ground into a powder, I sift it into a bowl or ziplock bag… Whatever is left over in the sifter, I grind again… Rinse and repeat until there is little to no psilocybin mushrooms left in your sifter…
It’s as simple as that!
However It is important that you keep THIS in mind...
Do Not Make THIS Mistake With Your Powdered Psilocybin…
So here’s the thing… Once psilocybin is ground into a powder and exposed to air, it begins to break down… Pretty much right away!
This means if you do not intend Microdosing that powdered psilocybin mushroom within 3 months, you are going to lose a significant amount of medicinal effects…
How To Keep Your Psilocybin POTENT And ACTIVE!
Luckily there are some simple solutions to maintaining your medicine’s potency and active constituents…
1. Like all supplements… Keep in an airtight container, at room temperature, and away from direct sunlight. Also keep your psilocybin away from wifi or EMF producing devices if possible.
The ideal airtight container is “myron” glass - this glass blocks EMF, sunlight and other harmful environmental factors.
2. Keep your medicine in the freezer….
I always keep my whole mushrooms and my mushroom powders in the freezer… This will increase their life expectancy by a significant amount!
3. Make an herbal formula…
As we talked about above, combining psilocybin with herbal supplements like lion’s mane, reishi, and cacao makes a more effective Microdose… Not only is your Microdose going to be more medicinal, but it will also last longer! That’s because supplements like reishi, lion’s mane, and cacao are chalk-full of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. These compounds basically reduce oxidative stress, which is the exact thing that will reduce the potency and shelf life of your psilocybin!
4. Make Microdose capsules…
When you encapsulate your Microdose herbal formulation (or just raw mushroom powder) you will significantly increase the shelf life of your psilocybin… This is for the same reason as we stated above. Oxidative stress. Capsules will protect your powder from oxidative stress. There is no need to freeze your Microdose capsules.
How To Microdose Psilocybin For MAXIMUM Results…
It’s hard to go wrong with Microdosing, as long as you know the dose that works best for you… However there are definitely ways you can get the most out of your Microdose…
We spoke at length about that in this article… Things like intention, meditation, journaling, and other ways to go deep with your Microdose…
However on a physiological level, follow these guidelines to get maximum results…
Take your Microdose on an empty stomach first thing in the morning… Food tends to reduce the strength of a Microdose… So take without food for a stronger effect. First thing in the morning is best, because microdoses tend to be energizing.
Combine with other botanicals… As we spoke of above, combining psilocybin with other botanicals and herbs will increase the efficacy and strength of your microdoses… Not only do herbs and botanicals have their own physiological benefits… But they also enhance and potentiate the effects of psilocybin! For example, cacao or coffee will drive the psilocybin deeper into your bloodstream and your nervous system!
Consider combining specifically with lion’s mane and reishi, as these are proven to support the health and healing of your nervous system…
